RICHARD GERE, STICK TO ACTING
Some Hollywood actors mistake their acting talents for insight into complex political situations. Take one Richard Gere, who thinks that playing King David on screen means that he should get involved in the middle east conflict.
Mr Gere recently visited Israel and met up with various Israeli and palestinian politicians and dignitaries, ostensible to advance the cause of peace. I say ostensibly, because I suspect that his sympathies lie with the palestinians. Take the following excerpt from an article in the Baltimore Jewish Times:
"All the people here are involved in action for peace between Jews and Arabs in Israel," Ms. Tamir [Israel's former absorption minister, Yuli Tamir] told Gere, "but we are also working hard on dialogues with Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza."
For a moment, Mr. Gere threw Ms. Tamir off balance when he asked whether she trusted Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's commitment to peace.
And of course there is his warm pose with Hanan Ashrawi, that almost made me bring up today's breakfast.
You would think that if he was truly a humanitarian, he could have visited some terror victims and come out strongly against the massacring of innocent Israeli civilians. But instead, he is another in a long list of celebrities who may have plenty of money in the bank, but is morally bankrupt.
